Finding Reliable Rentals in Mexico
One of the things I enjoy as a traveler is freedom, but one thing I need as a traveler is lodging. I have been traveling, living and working in Mexico for over 10 years. Here are some tips I learned about finding reliable (honest) owners to rent a room or house from - without a contract.
One thing most travelers face is the uncertainty of the location they are about to visit; google can testify to the countless concerns and questions that those about to begin a journey entertain.
From looking for a safe neighborhood to wondering where to find legitimate owners with clean rentals, the traveler without foreknowledge the traveler is swinging blindly hoping to hit all the fine point.
Monthly Rentals in Mexico - No Contract Needed!
Although you can find several reputable sites that let you book vacation rentals online, there are few good sources where you can find a property owner, honest & real photos of the place they are renting, and reviews from other travelers who have stayed at their place.
The one I use the most is AirBNB.
On AirBnB, you can rent a room or a whole place from property owners all over Mexico. Not only will you have a secure spot reserved for you whenever you arrive, you will also have the contact name and number for a property owner who just might have what you are looking for. I found some decent places for less than $20 USD a day, internet, furnished and all-included.
If you liked the place, let them know and leave them a good review. Later give them a call and let them know you need a place for a month or so. You will be surprised how many of the ambitious owners are willing to make a side-deal with you if you need the place for a month or so.
Bonus, no contract and noone peeking into your banking account - which is what you will have to do when dealing with local realtors in Mexico.
I am writing this blog entry from a "home-office" who's owner I found on AirBNB. We negotiated a deal and now I have a work solution for less than $140 a month - again, fully-furnished and internet included - no contract. So, yes, this works.
